Concrete services and typical prices in Huntsville

  • Driveways

New driveways, full replacements and extensions. A good driveway sits on packed crushed stone, and its crack-control grooves (joints) are planned before the pour.

  • Patios

Backyard patios and pads for grills, tables and hot tubs. A patio should slope so rain runs away from the house.

  • Stamped Concrete

Slate, stone and brick patterns, colors and borders for patios, walkways, pool decks and driveway edges.

$8 to $19 per square footnational, HomeGuide, December 2025

  • Repair & Leveling

Sunken slabs lifted back into line, raised edges between sections (trip edges) fixed and cracks sealed. A section that is too broken to lift needs replacing.

$4 to $9 per square footslab lifting (mudjacking), national, HomeGuide, November 2025

  • Slabs, Sidewalks & Steps

Shed and garage slabs, walkways to the door, and front or back steps. Steps should all be the same height.

How a long-lasting concrete driveway is built

  • A firm base. The ground is graded, soft or wet spots are dug out, and a layer of crushed stone is pressed down hard before any concrete arrives.
  • The right thickness. 4 inches for cars and pickups, 5 to 6 inches where light trucks park (Virginia Ready Mixed Concrete Association).
  • Joints in the right places. Straight grooves no more than 24 to 36 times the slab's thickness apart: about 10 feet on a 4-inch slab (National Ready Mixed Concrete Association).
  • Water runs away. The slab falls away from the garage and the house, toward the street or the yard.
  • Time to harden (cure). No cars for at least seven days (Virginia and Iowa ready-mixed concrete associations).

What changes the price of a concrete job in Huntsville

No one can price your job honestly without measuring it and looking at the ground. These are the things that change the number:

  • Square footage and shape. Straight rectangles cost less to shape than curves, steps down a slope or lots of corners.
  • Taking out the old surface. Removing and hauling away old concrete costs about $3 to $8 per square foot (HomeGuide, May 2025), usually as its own line on the quote.
  • The ground underneath. Soft or wet spots have to be dug out and replaced with compacted stone before anything is poured.
  • The finish. A plain broom finish costs least. Stamped concrete costs more.
  • Access. If the concrete truck can't reach the spot, the concrete has to be pumped or wheeled in.

How a concrete job works

  1. Call or fill in the form

Say what you want poured or fixed, the rough size, and anything in the way: trees, slopes, wet spots, a narrow gate.

  2. Visit and quote

The company measures, checks the base and the drainage, and gives you a price.

  3. Prepare, pour and let it harden

Old concrete out, ground graded and compacted, forms (the boards that hold wet concrete) set, then the pour. You keep off it while it hardens (cures).

Before you hire any concrete contractor in Huntsville

Whoever you hire, these checks help you avoid the usual problems:

  • Get the details in writing. The quote should list the area, thickness, reinforcement, joint spacing, finish, removal of the old surface and cleanup.
  • Ask about the base. Most concrete failures start underneath. Ask how the ground will be prepared and compacted.
  • Ask where the water goes. A driveway or patio should slope away from the house, never toward it.
  • Check insurance. Ask for a certificate of insurance sent by the insurer, not a photo of one.
  • Check licensing. In Alabama, building, repairing or improving a home for someone else needs a Home Builders Licensure Board license when the job costs more than $10,000, unless the work is outside the board's jurisdiction. The law doesn't name driveways or patios, so ask. The permits and licenses guide shows how to look a license up.
  • Ask about the warranty. Ask what warranty the contractor gives, and get it in writing.
  • Don't pay everything up front. A deposit is normal; the full price before the pour is not.

Huntsville rules and conditions that affect concrete work

Driveway permits
Building, changing or replacing a driveway approach, curb, gutter or sidewalk needs the City of Huntsville's Driveway Curb Cut Permit, from the Traffic Engineering Office. See the permits and licenses guide.
Call 811 before digging
Alabama law requires notice to Alabama 811 at least two working days before digging, not counting the day you call. It's free. A revised law takes effect on January 1, 2027.
Homeowners association (HOA) approval
In Hampton Cove, for example, all changes to the outside of a home go to the Architectural Review Committee, and its rules allow up to 45 days to process them. Check your own HOA's rules before you book a date.
The ground underneath
The Geological Survey of Alabama reports that much of Madison County sits on Fort Payne Chert and Tuscumbia Limestone, weathered near the surface into clay soils and karst (rock with underground cavities). A solid, compacted base matters here.

Concrete questions from Huntsville homeowners

When can I drive on a new concrete driveway?

Not for at least seven days, say both the Virginia and Iowa ready-mixed concrete associations. The Virginia association adds: keep heavy trucks off for at least six months. Ask the company that pours it when you can walk on it, because that depends on the mix and the weather.

Why does new concrete crack?

Concrete shrinks as it dries, so some cracking is expected. Control joints (straight grooves cut into the slab) give the cracks a planned, straight line. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association puts joints no more than 24 to 36 times the slab's thickness apart, about 10 feet on a 4-inch slab, cut at least a quarter of the way into the slab.

When is the best time to pour concrete in Huntsville?

Spring and fall are easiest on fresh concrete. In Huntsville the median last spring freeze is March 24 and the median first fall freeze is November 8, and the normal July high is 91.5°F (1991–2020 normals of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA). Concrete can be poured in summer and winter too, with extra care: early starts and moist curing in the heat, and protection from freezing in the cold.

Do I need a permit for a driveway in Huntsville?

For the part that meets the street, yes: the City's Driveway Curb Cut Permit covers building, changing or replacing any driveway approach, curb, gutter or sidewalk. It's handled by the City's Traffic Engineering Office. Read the permits and licenses guide for the details.
